Ex-Top Gear trio shock commuters in stunt for new show by smashing up car at King’s Cross

Commuters in King's Cross were today treated to a foretaste of the destruction that will be inflicted on cars all over the world when the former Top Gear trio Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May return to TV on Friday.

An abandoned “crashed” Toyota Prius bearing the personalised numberplate M4Y was left crumpled against a red post box.

A similar stunt surprised passers-by in Berlin’s Hackescher Markt where another damaged Prius — with the numberplate H4MMOND — was protruding out of the ground.

The staged accidents are part of the build-up to the launch of The Grand Tour TV series, which will be released on Amazon Prime 20 months after the trio quit the BBC.

A third 'accident' is expetced to take place somewhere in the UK on Tuesday afternoon.

Clarkson, Hammond and May have travelled all over the world to shoot stunts and scenes for the new series, which is reported to have a huge budget.

Speaking about the eagerly-anticipated launch and the change in direction, Hammond recently told The Telegraph:

“It’s like coming out of the Army, coming out of the BBC after all those years.

"We're not going to disappoint, because we can't. We've got to make this good or they will come and torch us - and rightly so."

Former racing driving and motoring editor of Confused.com, Amanda Stretton said: “It’s great to see the return of Clarkson, May and Hammond. A travelling tent of a studio means we will see a revamp of the old format which is good news for fans as elements of the old show were perhaps beginning to turn stale. This is the perfect opportunity to freshen things up.

“The producers have pulled off a coup in the first episode comparing the elusive hypercars Ferrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder, something the BBC tried and failed to achieve after the three manufacturers refused to be put in a back-to-back test."

Fans who want to watch will have to pay a discounted £59 subscription to Prime.
