– The Trade Union Congress (TUC) is asking the federal government to immediately commence implementation of an increase in workers’ salaries
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria has said it is time for the federal government to scale up the salaries of workers because the civil servants cannot continue sacrificing for greedy political office holders.
The TUC stated this through its president, Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama, and its secretary-general, Simeso Amachree, in reaction to the reported delivery of 28 extotic cars to the House of Representatives recently.
Kaigama’s TUC is warning lawmakers against frustrating Nigerians
The House recently received the 28 cars which are part of a number of cars expected to be delivered fully in January 2017.
The legislative body however said the cars were meant for committee work with the female senators getting the first set.
TUC said it considers the action of the lawmakers at this time the country is reeling in serious financial challenges as insensitive and a misplaced priority.

“The congress sees the ostentatious life of lawmakers and most politicians as the bane of the nation’s development.
“Our system only favours the politicians and the wealthy more at the expense of the impoverished masses.
“These lawmakers are just too unreliable.They tell us to pray for the country while they revel in Abuja displaying theirexotic cars!
“They collect constituency allowance but they do nothing for their constituencies and nobody questions them. This is not the way to go,” the duo said in a statement made available to NAIJ.com.
The TUC said Nigerians had thought the current administration would alter the usual manner politicians in the country acted with impunity, but that the people of the country are daily getting disappointed in the system.
“Our hope by the day is being dampened by some individuals and institutions under the present administration.

“We had received the administration with high hopes but there reverse has become the case in the last one and half years.
“Daily the masses of the country are wounded by the impunity, unfavourable policies and self-serving disposition of our leaders,” the statement said, adding: “Their frugalilty and prodigality at a time the economy is struggling with recession shows the peak of insensitivity of those said to be representing us and it must not be allowed to continue.
“Come to think of it, the retirees are dying in droves without collecting their pension, whereas billions of naira are paid to them after four years.
“They buy whatever they want to buy;their children attend school abroad, they live in Government Reservation Areas (GRAs) and enjoy all privileges, while more than 50 percent of the population have no gainful employment. Nobody cares about us!
“We are calling on the federal government to take up the issue as a challenge if it is really serious in its anti-corruption crusade.

“In the same, government should, as a matter of urgency, come up with a living wage for workers. But our question remains: where lies the honour of our legislators?”
