KZN man nabbed for unlicensed firearms, stolen goods
A 43-year-old suspect was arrested and charged for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of suspected stolen vehicles.
|||Johannesburg - A 43-year-old suspect was arrested and charged for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of suspected stolen vehicles, in Verulum in KwaZulu-Natal, police have said.
Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said at about 8am on Tuesday, members from National Mobile Train unit were conducting crime prevention duties in the Verulam area when they followed up information about suspected stolen vehicles and illegal firearms at High street in Verulam.
“The members went to a premises and saw two vehicles fitting the same description given to them. A white Suzuki vehicle was circulated and came as a hijacked vehicle at Mthunzini area in May 2016 and a second vehicle which was a grey BMW was also circulated and it appeared that it was hijacked at Greenwood Park area in October this year,” said Mbhele.
“When the members requested the keys from the suspect, he could not give and the members had to break a side window of the said vehicle in order to search it. Inside the vehicle, three rifles which were two R5 and one AK47 with four fully loaded magazines were recovered.”
The arrested suspect is a Vice chairperson of Pisang Taxi Association and he will appear in the Verulam Magistrate's Court soon.
Acting KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, applauded the members for recovering the unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
