Jim Carrey labels dead girlfriend's mother Brigid Sweetman 'angry and bitter' in ongoing legal row
Jim Carrey has hit back at the mother of his dead girlfriend, saying that she became ‘angry and bitter’ when he refused to buy her a house.
The A-list star, who is facing wrongful death lawsuits filed by Cathriona White’s mother and her ex-husband Mark Burton, has now submitted his own 10-page declaration.
Slamming Brigid Sweetman’s claims that he illegally provided her daughter with prescription drugs which contributed to her suicide, Carrey has provided a detailed description of their relationship.
“Between 2012 and 2015, I was involved in two romantic relationships with Cathriona White,” he wrote.
“Although there were times during this period we were broken up, for much of the time between 2012 and 2015 we were together as a couple, including after she reached out to me in November 2014 to reconcile and resume our relationship which lasted until her death.”
Carrey claims that White only married Burton for a green card after he refused to do so, despite the fact that they were still dating.
“To my surprise, I later learned that in January 2013 Cat married a man in Las Vegas for her green card, while at the same time maintaining her actual relationship with me,” he wrote.
Hitting back at Sweetman’s claims that he had given his then girlfriend three sexually transmitted diseases, Carrey wrote:
“Normally Cat was very sweet, but when she felt rejected or upset she was prone to making up horrible stories and acting out in vindictive ways.
“Despite the rocky ending of our first relationship, Cat and I decided to put our breakup behind us and start seeing each other again. What followed was a new relationship, with ten wonderful, loving months together of the most beautiful relationship ever.’
The documents go on to claim that “Sweetman asked Carrey to buy her a house in 2015 and when he declined she became angry and bitter.”
Sweetman’s lawyer Michael Avenatt has now called the actor “disgusting and dishonest” in a new statement.
He said: "Earlier today, Jim Carrey filed a baseless motion with the court as part of his continued attack on a grieving mother. His conduct is disgusting and dishonest. Who attacks a mother of a dead girl?”
“When he is forced to testify under oath, the ugly truth will be laid bare. We are confident that the court will see through the nonsense Carrey is peddling.”
Irish born White died from a multiple drug overdose just a few days after splitting from Carey in September 2015.
