Hundreds of Nigerian students in Russia have protested against poor treatment by the federal government.
The protest was led by Faith Tosin, President of the Association of Nigerian Scholarship Students in Russia, with the students carrying placards.

Premium Times reports that the students, who are in the Eurasian country under the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) scholarship held the protest at the Nigerian embassy in Moscow to complain about the failure of the Buhari-led administration to pay their monthly stipends for around a year.

The students claimed that they have been abandoned by the government which is doing nothing for them at the moment. According to the provisions of the BEA, the Russian government pays the students’ tuition and accommodation while the federal government pays them $500 monthly for their feeding, medical and other needs.

A simultaneous protest was held in Abuja by parents of the students on Monday, October 17 and Premium Times quoted Chinyelu Ikeliani, mother of one of the students in Moscow studying Medicine, as saying he has not received his stipend for a year.
“I am really sad about the whole situation, because the government knows that the students cannot work with the visa given to them,” she said.

“What do they expect them to do? For one whole year, these students have not received anything from the Federal Government of Nigeria. It is so disheartening.”
The Charge d’affairs of the Nigerian mission in Russia, Gafai Usman later advised the students to write a petition through his office to the relevant authorities in Nigeria.

Usman promised to report the issue to ministry of foreign affairs that will take care of the concerns raised.
“I have responsibility to report what has happened today to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” he said.
Meanwhile, more drastic changes are being made in the Nigerian educational sector. Just on Sunday, October 16, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), revealed that it has scrapped the use of scratch cards for any transactions and services.
Now another major change is being introduced by the National University Commission (NUC). The commission has announced that they have scrapped of sub-degree diploma programmes in all Nigerian universities.
