DA ward candidate pelted with rocks and stones
DA ward candidate Angus Mackenzie has opened a case of assault after he was pelted with rocks and stones while campaigning in Bonteheuwel.
|||Cape Town - DA ward candidate Angus Mackenzie has opened a case of assault after rocks and stones were thrown at him while campaigning in Bonteheuwel on Tuesday night.
DA Western Cape spokesperson Anneke Scheepers said Mackenzie claimed that while on board a trailer canvassing for support in the area, members of the public intercepted them, and hurled insults and threw rocks at the campaigners.
Earlier this week Mackenzie was captured on a video that showed an elderly man allegedly being assaulted by DA supporters at a rally in Elsies River.
“The man who was driving the vehicle pulling the trailer saw this and accelerated to leave,” Scheepers said.
“We condemn violence in any way shape or form. These individuals were pelting our campaigners,” she added.
ANC local ward candidate Shanaaz Gafieldien said the community had asked the DA campaigners to leave the area after they had used a loudhailer to call for support.
She also said Mackenzie tried to intimidate her by campaigning in front of her home and claiming she sheltered gangsters.
Gafieldien said she requested that Mackenzie move away from her home, and was later informed that a man had been assaulted by Mackenzie in the clash.
Police spokesperson Frederick Van Wyk confirmed that an assault case was opened with the Bishop Lavis SAPS.
No arrests have been made.
