"The project started about two years ago when my sister and I were putting together a video game themed group show in her gallery," Navas told BuzzFeed.
"I knew I wanted to do a Super Metroid themed piece, but was kind of at a loss for how to represent it," she said. "Then one day, when I went to work, I came across an image of the Mayan calendar on a customer's shirt."

"It felt like getting punched in the face as images went racing through my head of how I could combine one of my favorite childhood games with the intricate, beautiful art of the Mayan culture."
"My family on my father's side is from Mexico City, so I realized a connection to the art style right away and it felt very natural."
