FBI man admits acting as Chinese government agent
Former FBI employee Kun Shan Chun faces up to ten years in jail after he pleaded guilty to illegally acting as an agent of the Chinese government.
|||Washington - Former US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) employee Kun Shan Chun pleaded guilty in a New York court to illegally acting as an agent of the Chinese government, the US Department of Justice said in a statement on Monday.
Chun, a native of China and naturalized US citizen, was an FBI electronics technician with a Top Secret security clearance until his arrest on March 16, according to the statement.
“On multiple occasions prior to his arrest in March 2016, at the direction of Chinese government officials, Chun collected sensitive FBI information and caused it to be transmitted to Chinese Official-1 and others, while at the same time engaging in a prolonged and concerted effort to conceal from the FBI his illicit relationships with these individuals,” the Justice Department noted.
In 2006, according to court records, Chun entered into relationships with Chinese nationals purporting to be affiliated with a Chinese company called Zhuhai Kolion Technology Company Ltd. (Kolion), through which he was introduced to Chinese government officials.
Beginning in 2006, Chun transmitted FBI materials, including photographs restricted documents summarizing surveillance technologies and information on solid-state hard drives, to Chinese officials in exchange for financial compensation, the statement added.
Chun failed to disclose his relationships with Chinese Official-1, other Chinese nationals and Kolion, in violation of FBI policy, the statement explained.
Chun pleaded guilty on Monday to acting as an unauthorized agent of China. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
