– The Nigerian army ambushed men of the Boko Haram sect in Sambisa forest

– About 2 people were killed in the attack

– A large number of items were recovered from the insurgents

Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, the acting director army public relations has said that on Sunday, July 24, troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE ambushed Boko Haram terrorists crossing into Sambisa forest from Komala and Musafanari axis with logistics items.

According to Col Usman, the attack was carried out in the he early hours of the morning,  The ambush party killed 2 Boko Haram terrorists, while 2 soldiers sustained gunshot wounds. The wounded have since been airlifted and are receiving treatment at a military medical facility.

The troops also recovered 2 AK-47 rifles with registration numbers 565214175 and 5-65399 respectively, 4 AK-47 rifle magazines fully loaded, 25 litres of petrol, as well as assorted food items. They also recovered a motorcycle and 2 bicycles amongst other items from the terrorists.

Meanwhile, a religious group, the Northern Inter Faith and Religious Organization for Peace has urged the federal government to consider granting amnesty to members of the Boko Haram terrorists.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Sunday, July 24, the national coordinator of the group Musa Fomson said amnesty will serve as an incentive for the terrorists to drop their arms. Fomson said: “Our suggestion is that the authorities strongly consider granting amnesty to members of Boko Haram that are not high up in its command structure as an incentive to make them drop their weapons without further human tolls since our humanity is on trial in addition to the security situation as the war on terror reaches an advanced stage.” 

Fomson also the amnesty should specifically take in consideration the non-combatant members of the dreaded group. “We must also warn that the amnesty being suggested should be aimed at demobilizing Boko Haram members and must not be converted into a money dashing jamboree.

It must also be monitored in a way that it is possible to keep track of those that sign up for the deal,” Fomson said.
