Willie Hofmeyr, Mamiki Shai and Kevin Malunga are the front runners to succeed Thuli Madonsela as SA's Public Protector.
|||Former head of the Asset Forfeiture Asset and current prosecutor Willie Hofmeyr, ex-deputy Public Protector Mamiki Shai and her deputy Kevin Malunga are the front runners to succeed Thuli Madonsela.
This was after Parliament on Wednesday shortlisted 14 candidates from a list of 64 individuals nominated to be the next Public Protector.
MPs in the ad hoc committee shortlisted Western Cape High Court Judge Siraj Desai.
The process to shortlist candidates began late in the day after MPs wrangled on the procedure to be followed and administrative issues.
However, after matters were settled the ad hoc committee, chaired by ANC MP Makhosi Khoza, agreed to trim the list from 64 names to 14 candidates that will be interviewed in August.
The other candidates who were shortlisted include Parliament’s former legal adviser advocate Nonkosi Cetywayo and head of the Southern African Litigation Centre Kajaal Ramjathan-Keogh.
The process has been in the public eye for several months after it was announced that Madonsela’s term was coming to an end in October.
Parliament has until the end of August to find a suitable candidate to take over the reigns.
