Obasanjo humbles judges, tells them what they hate to hear

– On several occasions, some Nigerians have had cause to complain about the country’s judiciary and judicial processes

– Obasanjo said the judiciary must do all within its powers to restore Nigeria’s glory and pull it out of economic challenges

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has come down hard on judges saying that they have become a problem to themselves and Nigeria.

Obasanjo, who also recently slammed governors in the country over their interference in the local government system, is not happy that some judges in the country now give conflicting judgements as if they are engaged in competition or battle of wit.

The former president, who spoke at a book launch in Abuja, pleaded with the judiciary to help clear Nigeria’s political and economic challenges, according to a report by Daily Trust.

To him, the judiciary has a lot of roles to play to free Nigeria from problems that have held it down for long.

Obasanjo lamented that courts of co-ordinate jurisdiction now compete with one another.

“With all the criticism about the practitioners, I concur with the book reviewer that if our country must make progress, the judiciary and the law profession must have a lot to do,” he said while commending the author of the book for coming up with a useful material for both legal practitioners, lawmakers and citizens.

The book was written by Sebastine Tar Hon, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) .

Speaking at the event, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, commended the author of the book for focusing on issues such as surrogate pregnancy, law of anaesthesia (mercy killing) and right to privacy of public figures among others.

In his review of the book, Professor Dakas Dakas (SAN), said the book was necessary because it would be a reference point concerning contemporary issues in the country.

Dakas, the dean of the Law faculty, University of Jos, Plateau state, said: “We live at a time when we grapple with conflicting judgment of courts. Courts of coordinate jurisdiction acting as lord over others, high level of impunity and high cost of governance.”
