The deputy president of the Senate, Ike Ekwerenmadu on Tuesday May 31, called on security agencies to always be cautious when quashing disturbances and protest to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.
Ekerenmadu who gave this call while speaking on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, said that the country had witnessed a lot of unnecessary killing arising from clashes with security agencies.
He said that the protest by members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) which led to a bloody clash in Delta and Anambra could have been handled differently.

“I will like to use this opportunity under Order 43 to say that the security agencies must apply caution in trying to quell disturbances.We have had so much of blood bath in this country under different circumstances and we cannot continue to lose young men and women because the future of this country belongs to them.
“It is important that this senate rise to condemn any act of killing in any part of this country especially with the one that concern the major part of our future which remains the youth.We are now in a democracy and people should be entitled to speak their mind to assemble under responsible circumstances.
“Security agencies must also be responsible in dealing with those circumstances to ensure that lives are not lost unnecessarily.I just wish to bring to the notice of the senate for us to take note and possibly the states involved to set up enquiry to find out what led to these clashes,” he said.
The motion was however not debated on the floor of the Senate.

Meanwhile the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki in his response said that although there could not be any debate on the matter but it was necessary that actions were taken on the matter.
“I think that the point he has raised must all draw attention and see what necessary action will be taken in other to address this matter,” he said.
No fewer than seven people were confirmed dead following protest by members of the MASSOB, in Asaba on Monday, May 30.
The Acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in Delta, Charles Muka, confirmed this in a statement. He added that the police recorded two casualties.
Meanwhile, Theodore Orji, former governor of Abia state and senator from the central senatorial district, also proposed to bring a bill for the establishment of an “institute of chartered politicians” to the Senate.
The bill sponsored by Barnabas Gemade, representing Benue North East senatorial district is titled an Act to establish the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants of Nigeria (CIMAN).
The bill seeks to promote the “practice of the arts and science management accountancy in the federation.”
While making his contribution, he said “the bill will be for those politicians who have not lost an election, like the senate president.”
Senate President Bukola Saraki referred the bill for the establishment of CIMAN to the committee on establishment and public service for further legislative action after it passed second reading.
