A bill to alter Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution to increase the jurisdiction of the Sharia Court is in the offing in the House of Representatives.
Tagged ‘Sharia Expansion Bill’, the bill has already passed its second hearing.
The bill is being sponsored by Abdullahi Balarabe Salame, an All Progressives Congress (APC) member from Sokoto state.
Salame, 55, is a one-time speaker of the Sokoto state House of Assembly. He represents Gwadabawa/Illela constituency since and has been a member of the House since 2011.

When NAIJ.com got across to Salame, he clarified that the bill is not extending Sharia, but actually extending the existing Sharia Court’s jurisdiction.
The bill is restricted to the Federal Capital Territroy, Abuja and the Northern states where Sharia courts are already in existence.
