Durban - Colleagues of slain nurse Thabsile Doyisa, who on Wednesday demonstrated outside the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court against bail for her alleged killer, are pained by her death and would continue to come out in their droves until justice is served.
Hoisting placards with the words “No bail for Thabi’s killer” and “Abusers must stay in jail”, high above their heads, the nurses from Edendale Hospital, all clad in their crisp white uniforms, toyi-toyed and sang outside the court as Doyisa’s husband, Warrant Officer Nkosinathi Shangase, appeared briefly.
Shangase, 43, from the Public Order Police Unit in Pietermaritzburg, is charged with fatally shooting his wife in the head with an R-5 rifle on April 22 .
It is alleged that Doyisa, 46, an advanced midwife at Edendale Hospital, had just arrived at her Napierville home that night after her shift, when her husband shot her in her head at point-blank range.
ER24 paramedics who attended the scene said Doyisa was still in her uniform and had already died before their arrival.
Shangase fled the scene before police could arrive, but was arrested a few hours later.
He had indicated he would be pleading not guilty to the murder charge.
Shangase was expected to apply for bail on Wednesday, however his attorney, Petrus Coetzee requested an adjournment to allow for Shangase’s family to raise funds for his defence.
The state is opposing bail.
The application was adjourned until June 15.
