Balarabe Musa, the first civilian governor of Kaduna state, has narrated how the military regime of Muhammadu Buhari jailed him for 20 weeks without trial.

In an exclusive interview with Pulse, Musa stated that even while he and other Nigerians have forgiven what he defined as Buhari’s army atrocities, continuing that the president must listen to Nigerians as it is the practice in every democratic setting.

He said there are a lot of fears to workers and other civil society groups embarking on protest over hike in fuel price.

“There are so many things Buhari did during his military regime which ought not to happen now under democracy. Particularly, the jailing of so many people that occupied public office without finding them guilty of anything,” ex-governor said.

“I will give you an example of myself. I am not making it personal but just an example. I was kept in prison for over 20 weeks without interrogation and without any evidence that will warrant me to be detained that long.”

“Not only me. Other fellow Nigerians suffered the same fate. But Buhari has been forgiven because of the nature of Nigerians who forgot and campaign for him in 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015,” he added.

While civilian government had returned to Nigeria in 1979 with the election of Shehu Shagari, discontent with miserable economic conditions and what the army perceived as corrupt politicians led to military coup on December 31, 1983, and Buhari was chosen unanimously to be the new head of state.

Firstly, many Nigerians had welcomed Buhari’s efforts to root out corruption and improve societal values, the repressive measures employed by his regime, against a backdrop of continuing economic troubles, led to dissatisfaction.
