– The payment for the property located in Maitama area of Abuja was done in two tranches

The third prosecution witness in the trial of the former chief of defense staff, Alex Badeh has narrated how the defendant paid for a property in Maitama area of Abuja.

Testifying in court today, May 18, Useni Umar, an estate manager said the former chief of defence staff ordered that $6.2 million (N1.86 billion) be paid in two tranches for the property located at No. 6 Ogun River street, Maitama.

“Badeh instructed that the sum of $6.2 million dollars be released  in two tranches within the period of two weeks  for the purchase of the property located at no 6, Ogun River close Maitama, Abuja after we carried out a joint inspection on the property and he  was satisfied,” Umar said.

The witness tagged prosecution witness 3 (PW3) that the directive to search for “edifying” retiring home for the former defence chief came from Salisu Abdullahi Yushau, a retired air commodore and the former director of finance of the Nigerian air force.

Umar told the court that he inspected four different property with Abdullahi before the settled for the $6.2 million building.

“When I got the instruction from Yushau, the first inspection was carried out between myself and Yushau. The second inspection was carried out between myself, Badeh and Yushau while the third and fourth inspection was a joint inspection between myself, Badeh, his wife, son by name Sam and Badeh’s daughter.

“It was after the joint inspection of the property that Badeh having being satisfied with the property at no. 6 Ogun River  instructed that the sum of $6.2 milion dollars be paid in two tranches for the property,” the witness continued.

But in his cross examination by the defense counsel, Akin Olujimi, said he did not inform the Economic and Fianacial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that about the inspection of property because he only made a summary of the events that had occurred.

“I do not know that Yushau told the court that we inspected 3 properties, what I know is that we inspected 4, the 1st inspection that we carried out was between myself and Yushau.

“I told the court what happened, my own side of the story, it was after the fourth joint inspection and all of them were happy with the property that Yushau gave me the go ahead to negotiate with the property owners. It was Yushau that gave me the go ahead to negotiate with the owners of the property,” he said.

After a few questions during the cross examination, Olujimi prayed the court for an adjournment to enable him obtain the required materials for proper cross examination.
