Subsidy removal: Uproar over Kachikwu’s humiliation at NASS
The controversy surrounding the sudden removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government assumed a new twist on Monday, May 16, when members of the opposition in the House of Representatives denied Ibe Kachikwu, the minister of state for petroleum entry into the lower chambers.

Kachikwu on Wednesday, May 11, announced a new price band of 145 Naira per litre of petrol, linking the hike to the difficulty in getting foreign exchange and the inability of the nation’s refineries to produce at optimum capacity to cushion scarcity that has lasted for over five months.
Sequel to the hike in fuel price, Kachikwu was supposed to address the House following a special session convened the House leadership to discuss the removal of subsidy from petrol and its attendant price hike on. But the session went rowdy with chorusing of no, no, by the members of opposition.
The political drama which ensued in the House has divided Nigerians with some backing the opposition for refusing to grant Kachikwu access to the chambers on the grounds that the minister should have addressed the chambers prior to the fuel price hike.
Others however, suggested that the minister should have been allowed in the chambers in respect to the principle of freedom of speech.
