All major newspapers across Nigeria are reporting on the new price of petrol which was increased from N86 per litre to N145 per litre due to the removal of subsidy on the product.
Tribune newspaper
On the front page of Tribune newspaper, organised labour, led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congres (TUC), on Wednesday, rejected the planned increase in petrol price, saying it will vehemently resist the increment.
This came as the Federal Government announced that a new maximum pump price of petrol of N145 per litre came into effect from Wednesday.
The decision to jack up the price from N86.50 was reached after a meeting of stakeholders, presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.
Daily Sun newspaper
Explaining why the subsidy was removed, Daily Sun reported that its decision to deregulate the down stream sector of the oil and gas industry will encourage investments in refineries and other segments of the industry, prevent diversion of petroleum products and set a stable environment for the downstream sector in Nigeria.
Vangaurd newspaper
On its front page, Vanguard which is also reporting on the new oil price reported the opinion of Independent Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN). IPMAN’s the Vice President Alhaji Abubakar Maigandi, commended the Federal Government on the new pump price of petrol. Maigandi said the decision would help to put to an end the persistent petrol scarcity in the country.
Punch newspaper
Punch is reporting the views of the Executive Secretary, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Obafemi Olawore, who said, “We are looking for deregulation. If that is deregulation, we believe it is a step in the right direction. But we have not been officially communicated,” he said.
The National Operations Controller, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Mike Osatuyi, said, “The move is fantastic. That is what we have been clamouring for and we are going to have peace in the country. There is going to be price differential and competition in the market.”
Similarly, the President, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Dr. Frank Jacobs said the removal of the fuel subsidy was a step in the right direction.
