We tried it on an iPhone 5S running iOS 9.3 — and it worked!

First, check your storage. You need to have mere *megabytes* of space left for this to work.

This is because you'll need to rent a movie with a file that's bigger than the space you have left, so it prompts you to delete some content.
To check your storage, go to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud.
