Mesut Ozil believes Arsenal have no one else to blame but themselves for "screwing up" their bid to win the Premier League this season - although the midfielder insists there is still a chance the Gunners can still clinch the trophy in May.
Arsene Wenger's side kept themselves in contention to win their first league crown since 2004 after beating leaders Leicester City 2-1 in mid-February.
Despite the victory, however, Arsenal went on to lose their clash away to a weakened Manchester United side 3-2 before succumbing to defeat at home to Swansea.
The Gunners now sit in third place in the Premier League standings, but with Leicester leading the north Londoners by 11 points, Arsenal's chances of trumping the Foxes and Tottenham to the title look unlikely.
Ozil believes Arsenal must blame only themselves for scuppering their charge for the Premier League crown this term, but is hopeful of results playing into their hands before the end of the season.
"Looking at our season so far, we have to be honest and admit that we screwed up ourselves," the Germany international told Spox. "We did not play to our potential in the games against the so-called smaller teams. You immediately get punished for that in the Premier League.
"But we still have a chance of winning the title. We have to hope Leicester and Tottenham slip up and then make the most of it.
"I would be delighted for Wenger if we win the title. He played a major role in my decision to join Arsenal. He was desperate to sign me.
"Everybody knows he is an extraordinary manager. He is always hungry for success, has a lot of experience and always takes his time for the players. He helps players develop."
