Multiple casualties reported after shooting at Greyhound bus station in Richmond, Virginia
Police responded on Thursday afternoon to a Greyhound bus station in Richmond, Virginia, where an active shooting was taking place, local news stations reported.
Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said in a press conference that a uniformed Virginia state trooper was talking to a man inside the bus station when the man drew a gun and shot the trooper, leading 2 troopers nearby to return fire. The shooter died after being transported to the VCU Medical Center.
The trooper who was shot was also transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Additionally, 2 civilians were transported with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. It was not immediately clear how the civilians were shot in the incident.
A firearm was recovered at the scene.
While Geller would not comment on the circumstances at the scene prior to the shooting, the Richmond mayor's office confirmed that there had been a drug training exercise occurring.
Initial reports had indicated that 2 troopers were among 6 injured, with 1 trooper dead, but this information was recanted at the press conference later Thursday afternoon.
Photos from the scene showed multiple ambulances and police vehicles surrounding the bus station. Valerio also reported that Virginia State Police were leading the investigation.
