Ekiti government plans heroic welcome for released lawmaker today

The member of the Ekiti House of Assembly, Afolabi Akanni, popularly called ‘Afo Garanto’, who was detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja for over two weeks after the intelligence service stormed the Ekiti state House of Assembly earlier this month, has been released from DSS custody and is expected back in Ekiti today.

According to a statement by Alhaji Ademola Bello, the special adviser on political matters, distributed to journalists and obtained by NAIJ.com, the lawmaker will arrive in the state in company of Governor Ayodele Fayose.
The statement urged all supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to converge at Fajuyi Park by 12 noon to give the lawmaker a ”heroic welcome.”
The invasion of the Ekiti state assembly by armed DSS personnel to arrest Akanni was widely condemned in Ekiti. They invaded the assembly complex, shooting sporadically and causing panic.
The House of Representatives summoned Lawal Daura, the director-general of the DSS, over the operation, but Daura ignored the lower house.
Their counterparts in the Senate also on Wednesday, March 9 directed its committee on national security and intelligence to conduct an investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the action of the DSS. The committee is yet to come out with its findings.
Media reports yesterday, March 23, suggested that Akanni was released by the DSS because of his deteriorating health condition.
In a related development, members of the Ekiti state House of Assembly recently revealed that they were offered $1 million to impeach Governor Fayose.

According to the lawmakers, officers of the DSS from Abuja are involved in the plot to coerce them into impeaching the governor. The DSS is yet to react to the allegations.
