Lamentation: We have been abandoned – ex PDP governors

– Former governors of the PDP claim they have been relegated in the politics of their states

– They vow to form a forum to address this issue

– Gbenga Daniel said the party lost because of certain mistakes

Former governors who served on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP have cried out that they have been abandoned by their successors.

The Punch reports that the former governors and former deputy governors made made this complaint when they met with the party’s National Chairman, Senator Modu Sheriff, at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, March 23.

The former governors claimed the action of their successors might necessitate the formation of a forum of former governors and former deputy governors to put an end to the treatment.

Some of the former governors present were Babangida Mu’azu of Niger, Ramalan Yero of Kebbi, Gabriel Suswam of Benue, Ikedi Ohakim of Imo, Sam Egwu of Ebonyi, Abdulkadir Kure of Niger, Idris Wada of Kogi, Achike Udenwa of Imo, Ibrahim Shekarau of Kano, Gbenga Daniel of Ogun, Theodore Orji of Abia, and  Sule Lamido of Jigawa.

The former president, Goodluck Jonathanand his deputy, Namadi Sambo and some other former governors were conspicuously absent although they were expected to be there.

Sheriff said as a former governors, he;s aware of what it takes to win an election.

He said: “As a former governor, I know what a governor goes through to win elections. You are the leaders of the party. Incumbent governors are also leaders too.

“Former governors must be carried along. They must be involved in all the affairs of the party so that we can get it right.”

Egwu said: “This meeting has shown that the party has not forgotten those that started the party. Most of us were in the meeting that marked the beginning of the PDP.

“But the convention in Nigeria is that the moment you are out of office, you are forgotten. Former governors that we helped put in office forgot us. It was like frustration for most of us. But because we believed in the party, we stayed back.”

Dniel who spoke on behalf of the south west said the PDP lost because what ‘we thought were greatest assets were perceived to be the liability’.
