Johannesburg - Gauteng traffic police on Sunday expressed concern at the high number of fatal road accidents in which more that 10 people died in the past 48 hours.

They accidents were the result of alcohol abuse, speeding, pedestrians crossing roads unsafely, and reckless and negligent driving, spokesman Obed Sibasa said.

The crashes included one in Carltonville when a driver died after he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree on Ada Street.

In the Pretoria area, two people died, one was critically injured, and another injured in a single car accident on the R513 Kwamhlanga road between Mamelodi and Moloto.

The driver of the Tata Indica lost control of the car which overturned, ejecting all four occupants, Sibasa said.

In another single car accident in Silverton, the 23-year-old driver of a Toyota Corolla lost control of the car which overturned on the N4 near Simon Vermoten Road. He died on the scene.

In Garsfontein, a motorcyclist lost control of his bike on a bend, fell off the bike, and died on the scene.

At Villeria, two people died on the Soutpansberg road in a head-on collision when a Quantum minibus taxi overtook unsafely and collided with a Hyundai i20, Sibasa said.

In Johannesburg, a pedestrian died in a hit-and-run on the M2 west at Cleveland, while another pedestrian died after being knocked over in Eldorado Park. Also in Johannesburg, a driver died after losing control of a car which then overturned on the M2 east near Cleveland.

In Ekurhuleni, a driver was killed on the R21 near the R562 in a head-on collision, and in Mogale City an off duty traffic officer was killed when he lost control of his car which overturned on the R41 between Kagiso and Azaadville.

The authorities were concerned about avoidable fatal crashes on Gauteng’s roads with road users, especially drivers, not adhering to the rules of the road.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that evidence of alcohol abuse found at most crash scenes and speeding are contributing factors. We are appealing to road users to adhere to the rules of the road and to comply,” Sibasa said.
