DSTV Basketball League starts next Saturday
According to The Nation, the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has moved the DSTV men’s Premier Basketball League forward by a week; the opening ceremony and the jump ball will now hold at the sports hall of the National Stadium in Abuja next Saturday.
The source reports that the sports hall of the National Stadium, Lagos would not be ready for the Jump ball today. Also, the sponsors, DSTV and NBBF are working on the release of the sponsorship fee to ensure that the season would be the best in recent years.
Tijani Umar, the president of the NBBF says that the shift would work in the fans favour as they are guaranteed a weekend of top flight basketball action next weekend in Abuja.

Umar said: “It would be a double header as the Zenith Bank National Women League would begin next Friday, while the fans would also return to the indoor the following day to witness the jump ball of the DSTV League. The sports hall of the National Stadium would refurbished for the Lagos-based teams, while calling on teams that were yet to register to avail themselves of the shift and register for the new season.”
He also noted that teams taking part in the Africa Basketball League (ABL), which is yet to get the nod of FIBA Africa and NBBF, would not have the opportunity to take part in the DSTV Basketball League.
“There will also be a little adjustment to the fixture as teams currently playing in the ABL will not be registered for the DSTV League.We are still hoping that the organizers of the ABL will meet with us as they have promised so that everything concerning their league will be ironed out. The idea is good and no one is working against it. But the organizers should know that they have to operate within the law governing the game by meeting with the NBBF, moreso, since it is clear all the games would likely take place in Nigeria,” Tijani Umar added.
