Alleged corruption: Saraki replies Obasanjo

– Bukola Saraki says the National Assembly is taking deliberate steps to strengthen the country’s democratic institutions

– Resolves to support the anti-graft agencies to perform their duty effectively

Bukola Saraki said the National Assembly was working with President Muhammadu Buhari to stem the menace of corruption in the country.

Senate president Bukola Saraki has replied a letter former president Olusegun Obasanjo wrote to the National Assembly on January 13, accusing the country’s federal lawmakers of fixing and earning salaries and allowances far above what the revenue mobilisation allocation and fiscal commission approved for them.

Obasanjo also accused the country’s federal lawmakers of corruption, greed, lawlessness and impunity.

But Saraki in his reply dated January 29, said the 8th National Assembly under his leadership was working with President Muhammadu Buhari to stem the menace of corruption in the country.

He said National Assembly was already taking deliberate steps to strengthen the country’s democratic institutions and ensure prudent management of resources.

“Likewise, the 8th National Assembly has made the issue of plugging leakages and cutting wastages in our public expenditure system a major priority that should not be toyed with. This may have happened in the past but it will not happen with us.”

According to Premium Times, Saraki said the lawmakers recognise the hard work the anti-corruption agencies are putting in the fight against corruption, adding that the Senate is resolved to support them to perform their duty effectively by providing them with adequate funding where necessary.

“We are hand in glove with the president on this matter and this is why we are overhauling our oversight functions to make it more effective in exposing corruption in the Ministries, Departments and Agencies, Saraki said.

Meanwhile, prominent politicians, lawyers and common people have strongly criticized the Senate for its determination to forge ahead with the purchase of exotic cars at the cost of N4.7 billion.

Earlier this month, two of the exotic cars were received by the Senate despite assertions that the transaction violated the provisions of the monetization scheme.

But Bukola Saraki has challenged the reports which was carried by by Premium Times that he has taken delivery of new cars worth over N330million.

The office of the Senate president stated that the only the official vehicle of the Senate president was changed and that the spare car in the convoy is the old one he inherited which he has been using since he assumed office June last year.
