Good news: Buhari says this essential commodity will soon be produced in Nigeria
Nigeria will soon commence with the production of essential drugs locally, President Muhammadu Buhari has assured.
Speaking through his special assistant on media and publicity while addressing pharmaceutical companies in the country in Abuja on Tuesday, President Buhari noted that the government will provide them with the necessary support to enable them carry out this production, instead of relying on wholesale importation.
The team constituted by the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library to develop an agenda for the health sector in the country and led by Professor Olu Akinkugbe, met with president at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Buhari recalled that the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) which he headed in the 1990s, developed what was referred to as ‘institutional strengthening’ which enabled the PTF support pharmaceutical companies with resources to aid local production of drugs.
He said: “We can revisit the experience. We can strengthen pharmaceutical companies to produce essential drugs needed in the country locally. We can then be sure of the quality of such medications.”
He also spoke about the privatization of healthcare institutions as is being mooted in some quarters, stressing that there is need to be careful and take a look at the state of development of the country before considering that option.
