Witwatersrand University called in extra security personnel after a bus owned by the institution was torched.
|||Johannesburg - Witwatersrand University on Friday called in extra security personnel on all campuses after a bus owned by the institution was torched on Wednesday night outside a student residence in Parktown.
The university’s spokesperson Shirona Patel said security measures were meant to ensure the safety of staff and students.
Patel said the institution had approached the police to open a criminal case.
“We do not yet know the reasons for this (torching of the bus), but if students are involved in the act, they will be suspended immediately and disciplinary proceedings will be instituted,” said Patel.
The Student Representative Council on social media condemned the attack on campus property.
Patel said there were no leads yet on who the perpetrators were or the reasons behind the attack.
