Armsgate: Olisa Metuh fights back at EFCC

– Counsel to the embattled PDP spokesman, Chief Olisa Metuh has asked that the EFCC be sanctioned

– Metuh’s legal adviser believes the antigraft agency is misleading the Nigerian people

A lawyer representing the national publicity secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh has asked the court to sanction the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

At the hearing of the infringement of human rights case against the EFCC by Metuh, Ifedayo Adedipe said the anti-graft agency in its press statement misled the public on the court proceedings in thr ongoing criminal trial of his client.

Adedipe told the court that the EFCC “deliberately” excluded major facts of court proceedings in its press statement released on Tuesday, February 9.

He said the EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren in a statement released to the public failed to highlight that the agency’s operative, Junaid Sa’id who stood as witness against Metuh denied that his client never ate his statement while in the custody of the commission.

Adedipe also said, a section of a document from the office of the national security adviser stated that the contract awarded to Metuh’s company, Destra Investment Limited satisfied all due process.

Going further, counsel to Metuh said  the EFCC operative had also stated that in the cause of his cross-examination that he did not come across any evidence that the accused person had any personal relationship and/or direct dealings with the former national security adviser Sambo Dasuki.

Sa’id had also said that there is no evidence to support his claim that Dasuki withdrew N10 billion that was allegedly shared between members of the PDP alongside his claim of $2 million given to Nneka Ararume, first prosecution witness against Metuh.

The lawyer had earlier urged the court to take necessary actions against the EFCC to prevent misinterpretation of court proceedings.

He said his client under under trial by the court and not the anti-graft agency nor the press.

“It is your lordship that is trying Metuh not the press or the EFCC,” Adedipe said. “We should not justify what is not justifiable,” he added.

In his reply, EFCC’s counsel, C. O  Ugwu said he blamed the press for any form of sensationalism.

“I know the press, they have the penchant for sensationalism. This is the problem we have in this country, they will hear what happen, go home and misinterpret,” Ugwu said, exonerating the commission.

But after hearing the pleas and reply, the judge, Okon Abang declined action on the matter.

He said, the issue on misinterpretation of court proceedings in this case should be brought up during the continuation of the criminal trial of Metuh.

Also speaking on the matter, another counsel to Metuh, Emeka Etiaba told journalists that the level of media trial of his client is “amazing”.

He said his team is disappointed at the EFCC’s effort to present his client as a symbol of corruption through the media even when the court has not pronounced him guilty.
