'Destiny' has a new Valentine's Day game mode — here's what it's like

The match is tied 4-4. The winner of the next game wins it all.

My teammate and I are huddled in a corner as both enemies approach. My teammate takes a golden gun shot to the chest, which kills him instantly. Now it's just me, two enemies, and my trusty shotgun.

Here's how it all went down in the final sweaty moments of the match:

This is Crimson Doubles. It's the centerpiece of Crimson Days, the week-long Valentine's Day event going on right now in "Destiny."

Crimson Doubles is a new 2-vs-2 multiplayer mode with a Valentine's Day twist: If your teammate falls in battle, you're infused with the power of "Broken Heart," which means you're quick to recover from damage, quick to reload your weapons, and quick to gain back your special abilities.

Here's another sweaty ending to yet another close match. The match is tied 4-4 and my teammate is down. To prevent a stalemate, these elimination-style matches have an overtime period, where the first team to capture one point on the map wins the game. In this case, capturing the point means winning the entire match. Like I was going to let that happen!

Here's how it all went down from my point-of-view:

This is essentially what you can expect from Crimson Doubles, and it's fun! Sure, it's a little heart-pounding at times, but you can still lose every game and get some nice rewards in the end.

For Crimson Days, Bungie has some new Valentine's Day themed goodies, like shaders that change the color of your character. They're decent rewards, but they're mostly cosmetic — they don't really affect how the game is played.

Bungie has also adorned the Tower — the main hub where "Destiny" players go to pick up bounties and fulfill questlines — with lots of roses for Valentine's Day. But besides Crimson Doubles and the rose-covered Tower, there's not much else to Crimson Days.

This live event will be over by next Tuesday, and after that, we have no idea what's coming in terms of new content, and when to expect it. As we previously reported, "Destiny" players shouldn't expect any meaningful changes to the game until later this year.

There might not be a meaningful "Destiny" expansion until "Destiny 2" comes out, which could be later this year or early next year. However, we are expecting Activision, Bungie's publisher, to announce some "Destiny"-related news during its earnings call this Thursday. We hope whatever is announced is a bit more substantial than Crimson Days, even though Crimson Doubles is a fun game mode that deserves to stick around longer than just a week.
