Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state has pleaded with labour unions in the state and at the national level to shelve their plan to shut down the state over the sack of over 3,000 civil servants.
Last week, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) told the governor to recall the 3000 workers he sacked, or stand to watch the state experience a total shutdown.

But the Imo state government has urged the NLC to not to embark on any strike on the ground that such action will be of no benefit to any one, according to a release signed on behalf of the governor by his chief press secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo.
According to Daily Post, the statement read in part: The national leadership of the NLC should be patriotic enough to advise the leadership of the NLC in the state to honour their invitations to participate in the high-powered 18 – member committee set up by the state governor to review the cases of the staff affected by the suspension in question, so that the matter can be resolved amicably in the spirit of no victor, no vanquished.”
Recall that Okorocha stated that the state was broke as its monthly expenditure has surpassed its monthly statutory allocation from the federal government.
He added that there was no going back on the state government’s plan to concession the management of parastatals.

The atmosphere in the state has been tensed following the governors plans to cut down the state’s work force.
Recently a supposedly peaceful strike action by the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Imo state branch, ended in chaos, after a security operatives fired at the crowd, leaving one person critically injured.
The NMA members were reportedly participating in a peaceful demonstration against the concessioning of public health institutions by Governor Okorocha on Thursday, February 4.
