Paper still prevails over e-books, according to new study

NEW YORK — Adult readers in the U.S. still strongly favor paper over e-books, according to a new study from the Pew Research Center. Around 65 percent of those surveyed had read a paperback or hardcover over the past year, compared to 28 percent who had read an e-book, Pew reported Thursday. Around 40 percent

F/A-18 crashes rise rapidly as budget constraints have led to overused planes, undertrained pilots

A year ago, Navy and Marine Corps leaders gave a dire warning to Congress: Budget cuts have hurt nondeployed units and could cost lives during a major conflict. The losses happened, but not in combat. Pilots died training at home. Since May, four F/A-18 Hornet or F/A-18E/F Super Hornet crashes involving nondeployed units killed two pilots and destroyed five planes.

US university to give admissions boost to slave descendants

Georgetown University on Thursday announced measures to atone for having profited from the sale of nearly 300 slaves in the 19th century, giving an edge in admissions for their descendants. The US university's president, John DeGioia, will discuss the steps in a speech later Thursday in Washington, and is to offer a formal apology. Georgetown, a Jesuit school founded in 1789 in the US capital, is one of the oldest universities in the United States.
