“Fears not confirmed”: No one punished under LGBT propaganda law in Kazakhstan

Tengrinews.kz – Since the adoption of the law “On Mass Media,” which provides for a ban on LGBT propaganda, no one in Kazakhstan has been held accountable. This was stated by Vice Minister of Culture and Information Yevgeny Kochetov.
According to Kochetov, the ministry is conducting legal monitoring, but no violations have been recorded.

“No one has been held accountable. In this case, we are talking about legal monitoring carried out by the Ministry of Culture and Information. Nothing has been identified, so the concerns expressed by some representatives of the non-governmental sector have not been justified,” Kochetov said on the sidelines of the Mazhilis.

The official noted that the information landscape has not significantly changed since the adoption of the new law.

“If we look at the information space, essentially nothing has changed. This norm may have a preventive nature — so that people think before publishing certain content,” the vice minister added.

At the same time, Kochetov clarified that such materials had been blocked even before the law was adopted.

“They were blocked earlier as well. There were a number of websites publishing such materials. But specifically in the context of this law — no, there have been no such cases,” he said.

Under the new legislation, LGBT propaganda is punishable in Kazakhstan. According to the authors of the law, the measure is aimed at protecting children and prohibits the publication of content promoting non-traditional relationships in media, social networks and other online platforms.
The law was signed by Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on December 30, 2025.
