Criminal case against Pavel Durov: position of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan
Tengrinews.kz – Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Sanjar Adilov commented on the information regarding the criminal case initiated in Russia against Telegram founder Pavel Durov.
In the corridors of the Mazhilis, journalists inquired whether it was safe for Durov to visit Kazakhstan and whether his extradition could be possible if a request were made by Russia.
According to Adilov, there are no criminal cases against Durov being handled by Kazakhstan's Ministry of Internal Affairs.
"The issue of initiating a criminal case does not arise on our side. We have not received any requests from the Russian authorities. Cooperation with foreign law enforcement agencies is handled by the General Prosecutor's Office, it is their jurisdiction," he stated.
Context
On February 24, Russian media reported that a criminal case had been initiated against Pavel Durov.
Later, Durov commented on this information, stating that the case was related to the restriction of the messenger’s work in Russia.
"Russia has opened a criminal case against me for “aiding terrorism.” Each day, the authorities fabricate new pretexts to restrict Russians’ access to Telegram as they seek to suppress the right to privacy and free speech. A sad spectacle of a state afraid of its own people," he wrote.
