Hazardous weather in Almaty: emergency service appeals to residents

Tengrinews.kz – The Department for Emergency Situations (DES) of Almaty has warned residents of the city and region about hazardous weather conditions.
According to the agency, a storm warning has been issued in the metropolis for 13 February due to fog and black ice.

“Residents and guests of the city are advised to be careful on the roads and avoid long trips in poor visibility, as well as postpone trips to the mountains, where wind gusts may reach 15–20 meters per second,” the DES said.

The agency also issued safety recommendations for icy conditions:

Walk slowly, placing your foot fully on the ground.
Avoid sudden movements and rushing.
Wear shoes with non-slip soles.
Do not keep your hands in your pockets — use them to maintain balance.
Bypass slippery areas, especially near building entrances and bus stops.
Elderly people should use a cane with a rubber tip.

It is also reported that between 13 and 16 February 2026, due to heavy precipitation and unstable snow cover in the catchment areas of the Ulken and Kishi Almaty rivers, snow avalanches are possible. Almaty residents are advised to postpone mountain hikes.
