Tengrinews.kz – Germany’s Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) is working on a plan to establish a network of bunkers across the country in response to escalating international threats, according to Deutsche Welle.
German media, including Bild, report that the BBK is currently assessing which public buildings, such as administrative facilities and metro stations, can be converted into shelters.
Additionally, a mobile application is in the works to help citizens locate the nearest bunker. The agency is also encouraging citizens to create shelters in private spaces like garages and basements.
In March, André Berghegger, head of the German Association of Cities and Municipalities, urged the federal government to invest billions to protect civilians from potential warfare.
“Security can no longer be taken for granted. It's not just about making the Bundeswehr capable of defense. The broader issue is protecting the population from war-related dangers,” he stated in an interview with Funke Media Group.
Berghegger emphasized the need to increase the number of bomb shelters in the country. Of the 2,000 public shelters built during the Cold War, only 600 remain operational, with a capacity for about 500,000 people.
“There is an urgent need to reactivate decommissioned shelters,” he added.
Earlier, Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced plans for structural reforms to the armed forces, aimed at preparing the German military for warfare.
