Arsenal have been handed a potential blow in the pursuit of one of their summer targets.

The Gunners are anticipated to strengthen their forward department ahead of next season.

A marquee striker and versatile winger will likely be signed during the transfer window.

Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo has been linked with the club on several occasions, but the Cameroon international has decided that he wants to join Manchester United, according to David Ornstein.

The 25-year-old favours a switch to the Red Devils if they can strike a deal with the Bees.

Mbeumo’s right wing preference would not suit Arsenal

The Gunners are planning to recruit a wide player. Mbeumo has been mentioned as a target, but the former Troyes graduate would not suit the club’s requirements, in our view.

Mbeumo is predominantly a right-sided winger and has occasionally played as a second striker. Arsenal have the right wing well covered with Bukayo Saka. They have a good deputy in Ethan Nwaneri.

It is unlikely that Mbeumo will join the club to play second fiddle to Saka. The Gunners need an upgrade on the left wing instead, with Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard being inconsistent.

Mbeumo cannot provide a solution there, having managed just six career appearances on the left wing. Hence, Arsenal were always unlikely to make a strong effort to purchase Mbeumo.

The winger, who scored 20 goals and provided eight assists in the Premier League last season, looks poised to join the Red Devils in a potential deal worth £50 million this summer.

United have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers and are now in pole position for Mbeumo despite failing to qualify for European football next term.

The Gunners must show more ambition in the transfer market. They need to sort out deals quickly rather than haggling over the final price and payment terms for their top targets.
