Tokayev on rising global tensions: 'Choose progress over war'
Tengrinews.kz – Speaking at the opening of the Astana International Forum, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev addressed the key challenges of the modern world: the escalation of armed conflicts, growing nuclear tensions, and the disconnect between rapid technological progress and outdated military solutions, citing Akorda.
The President noted that conflicts and wars continue to spread across continents and societies.
“According to last year’s data, 52 countries were in a state of armed conflict. The economic losses from violence reached $19 trillion, which is about 13.5 percent of global GDP. However, behind these numbers lies a more alarming reality: modern conflicts are becoming increasingly protracted and complex. They often involve a large number of players, including non-state actors. Moreover, deeply rooted contradictions are at the core of these conflicts,” Tokayev emphasized.
According to the Head of State, these factors significantly complicate the achievement of lasting peace.
“What is most concerning is that the current situation contradicts the new trends in artificial intelligence development, which is leading humanity toward an unknown reality filled with new meanings. Against this backdrop, military conflicts justified by history or politics seem outdated. Instead of wars, efforts — especially by the youth — should be directed toward progress and building an enlightened society,” stated Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Although traditional conflicts demand immediate attention, we must also focus on an even more complex prospect — the growing tension between nuclear-armed states, he added.
“Today, nine countries possess more than 13,000 nuclear warheads, and the risk of their use is increasing — whether due to error, accident, or escalation. Even a single detonation could cause catastrophic consequences, including a climate crisis and crop failure. Kazakhstan, having endured 450 nuclear tests, knows this firsthand. We voluntarily renounced our nuclear arsenal and continue to advocate for the non-proliferation of nuclear and biological weapons in the name of peace,” said the President of Kazakhstan.
The Astana International Forum takes place on May 29–30. It is a platform for dialogue among government representatives, international organizations, major companies, and academic circles to discuss the most pressing global issues — from economics and security to ecology and climate. The theme of the forum is “Connecting Minds, Shaping the Future.”
