'There may be': David Ornstein says Arsenal could sign player for key position with two stars poised to depart

Arsenal are preparing for a busy summer transfer window, and multiple signings could be made.

A defensive midfielder is one of the top priorities. Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is expected to join.

A marquee striker and a versatile winger are likely to be signed alongside a backup goalkeeper.

However, journalist David Ornstein claims another left-back could also come in if Kieran Tierney and Oleksandr Zinchenko depart.

He told NBC Sports: “There may be a left-back who comes in, with Kieran Tierney leaving and Oleksandr Zinchenko available for transfer.”

New left-back signing can’t be ruled out

Myles Lewis-Skelly has been a revelation at left-back since his breakthrough in September last year.

The 18-year-old has made the position his own. He has become a regular starter for the Gunners, having capitalised on Riccardo Calafiori’s injury woes.

There appears no need for another left-back, but the possibility can’t be ruled out.

Zubimendi is set to join the Gunners as a replacement for Jorginho. Negotiations are ongoing with Thomas Partey, whose contract expires on June 30.

If he were to depart, Ornstein has confirmed that the club could look at alternatives. In our view, Lewis-Skelly could move into a central role next season.

Lewis-Skelly was a defensive or central midfielder in the academy ranks. He could compete for places in the centre of the park if another left-back is signed.

Arsenal also have Takehiro Tomiyasu, Jurrien Timber, Jakub Kiwior, Tierney and Zinchenko, who can play left-back, but a new signing could still be on the cards

Tomiyasu is nursing a long-term knee injury and may barely play until 2026. Kiwior has looked uncomfortable when operating away from the centre-back role.

Tierney is joining Celtic on a free transfer this summer. Zinchenko also looks poised to depart. Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund could return for him.

Timber fared well at left-back at the start of the campaign, but the Dutchman is most effective from the right-back position, where he is competing with Ben White.

Hence, manager Mikel Arteta may consider a new left-back this summer to challenge the injury-prone Calafiori if Lewis-Skelly plays in midfield next term.
