“Persistent strangers“: what to do if you are asked to take a parcel at the airport
Tengrinews.kz - An Almaty resident complained about persistent strangers at the airport who repeatedly tried to force her to deliver a package to another city. A reader of Tengrinews.kz shared that in early October, strangers at Almaty airport persistently asked her to deliver packages. When she refused, she faced rude responses, and the strangers would not leave her alone until she left the waiting area.
"They asked me where I was flying to. I ignored the questions and pretended not to hear anything. But even then, I heard unpleasant remarks about how I could have helped. Why not just use courier services?" she said.
Tengrinews.kz reached out to Almaty airport's press service for comment.
"In such situations, the passenger should immediately contact the police department located at the airport. These actions will be classified under the article on harassment in public places. The airport strictly advises against taking other people's items," airport representatives stated.

The issue the passenger faced is of a legal nature. According to Article 449 of the Administrative Offences Code, harassment in public places is regulated by law and can result in a warning or a fine of up to five monthly calculation indices. The Police Department on transport recommended that travelers facing persistent attention file a complaint.
The press service of the Police Department on transport also warned passengers about the potential risks of accepting items from strangers.
"Accepting items from strangers can threaten your safety and public safety, as they may contain prohibited substances. Following this rule is the responsibility of every passenger. Refuse suspicious offers," the department emphasized.
The representatives also added that transport police officers regularly conduct preventive measures to warn against and stop administrative offenses, including harassment.
