Tengrinews.kz - Durong his Address to the Nation, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced the date for the referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant.
The referendum is scheduled to take place on October 6, 2024.
"In light of the growing global energy deficit, we urgently need reliable and environmentally friendly energy sources. I believe we must pay close attention to the development of nuclear energy. This type of generation can significantly meet the rapidly increasing demands of our economy. Currently, around 200 nuclear power plants operate in 30 developed and developing countries. We must think about the future, taking into account long-term national interests and the specificities of our country. That is why I have always advocated for a well-considered decision on the construction of a nuclear power plant, with broad public discussion of strategic plans," said Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
The President emphasized that every important step for the country should be taken with the support of the people, including the referendum on the nuclear power plant.
"I mentioned the need for this referendum last year, so the topic has been on the public agenda for a year. I believe this is sufficient time for citizens to make an informed decision. In this regard, I support the government's proposal. The nationwide referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant will take place on October 6 this year, and I will sign the corresponding decree today," the President announced.
According to Tokayev, the upcoming referendum will be another demonstration of the broad national dialogue and a clear example of implementing the concept of a "listening state."
"In essence, with these steps, we are shaping a new socio-political culture and establishing new standards for making key state decisions," Tokayev added.
