Poole Town 1-2 Wimborne Town – Match Report
Match report
Poole Town were well beaten at home by Wimborne Town in the StourCo Derby at Tatnam on Easter Monday.
Both sides came into the game on a poor run of form with the Magpies having one win in 11 and Poole with one win in seven matches.
Joe Lea and Pat Suraci made two changes from the draw with Evesham with Antonio Diaz and Dan Carr coming in to start.
Sam Roberts came back into the starting eleven for Tim Sills’ side with Billy Walker missing out.
The match got underway with both sides testing the waters in the early stages.
The first real chance of the match fell to Poole as Shaquille Gwengwe fired past the Wimborne goalkeeper Oscar Abbotson, but he was denied by the linesman’s flag.
Gwengwe went close again on the 19th minute after being found by Selim Saied, but his effort was deflected behind for a corner.
Wimborne had their first clear cut opening just before the half hour mark through Cam Munn, but Adam Parkes stood tall to deny the Wimborne number ten.
Eventually the deadlock was broken on the 38th minute through Sam Roberts on the follow up after Rafa Ramos’ effort crashed off the bar.
Not long after, things went from bad to worse for Poole as Wimborne doubled their lead through AFC Bournemouth loanee Ethan Sills.
The half came to a close with the away side in a deserved lead at the break.
The second half continued in similar fashion with Poole searching for a way back into the game, but Wimborne remaining resolute in their defensive efforts.
Gwengwe fired over the bar from just outside the 18 yard box on the hour mark.
The Magpies weren’t done yet though as they continued to search for a third in the hopes of putting the game to bed.
Will Fletcher almost found the back of the net for Wimborne but Adam Parkes kept Poole in it once again.
Poole sent everything they had at it, efforts from Kris Campbell and Billy Lowes both flashed past the post with the clock ticking down.
The Dolphins did eventually find the back of the net through club captain Jamie Whisken on the 92nd minute, but it all seemed too little too late for Lea and Suraci’s side.
The full time whistle went with Wimborne taking the three points and the bragging rights in the StourCo Derby with a massive win in their search for safety.
With three matches still to play, the Dolphins will need to get back to winning ways to ensure they finish in those playoff spots come the end of the season.
