Afghan Bodybuilder Qualifies for Mr. Olympia With Win in Netherlands

Afghan bodybuilder Mohammad Ali Azimi, who is based in Austria, has qualified for Mr. Olympia after winning the Interflex competition in the Netherlands, marking a major milestone for Afghanistan on the international bodybuilding stage.

Azimi secured first place on Monday in the Classic Physique division, earning direct qualification for what is widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious professional bodybuilding competition.

Azimi topped the field with a standout performance in a highly competitive lineup, while Spain’s Fran Mina Ibanez and Dutch athlete Siim Goossens finished second and third respectively, according to event-related reports and Afghanistan sports coverage. The result further strengthens the growing presence of Afghan athletes in elite international physique competitions.

With the victory, Azimi becomes only the second Afghan athlete known to have secured a place at Mr. Olympia, a landmark achievement in a sport where Afghanistan has had only limited representation at the highest level. Mr. Olympia is considered bodybuilding’s biggest global stage and features the world’s top athletes across several professional divisions.

Azimi is also reported to have trained for years under Afghan bodybuilding star Ali Bilal, one of the country’s best-known international physique athletes. Bilal has built a strong reputation in the sport after winning the Arnold Classic Men’s Physique title and finishing runner-up at Mr. Olympia, achievements that have helped raise Afghanistan’s profile in professional bodybuilding.

The latest result reflects a broader rise in Afghan participation in international individual sports, particularly among athletes training and competing abroad. For many Afghan sports followers, Azimi’s qualification is not only a personal breakthrough but also another sign that Afghan competitors are increasingly capable of reaching world-class stages despite limited sporting infrastructure at home.

Mr. Olympia is widely seen as the highest-level contest in professional bodybuilding, often described as the sport’s equivalent of a world championship. Qualification is typically earned through victories in recognised pro events, making Azimi’s win in the Netherlands especially significant for his career and for Afghanistan bodybuilding more broadly.

Azimi’s qualification for Mr. Olympia marks a rare and important success for Afghanistan in elite bodybuilding and adds fresh momentum to the country’s growing presence in international physique sports. His win is also likely to inspire a younger generation of Afghan athletes hoping to compete beyond regional and amateur levels.
