71 Missing After Migrant Boat Capsizes in Mediterranean
At least 71 migrants were reported missing in the central Mediterranean after a boat carrying 105 people capsized while trying to reach Europe from Libya, according to rescue groups. Two bodies were recovered and 32 survivors were rescued, in what aid organisations described as the latest deadly tragedy along one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes.
The Italian charity Mediterranea Saving Humans and the German rescue group Sea-Watch said the survivors were transferred to an Italian coast guard vessel and later taken to the island of Lampedusa. The groups said the boat had departed Libya on Saturday and overturned in a search-and-rescue zone overseen by Libyan authorities.
A video released by Sea-Watch appeared to show several people clinging to an overturned orange vessel as a nearby commercial ship moved in to assist. Rescue groups said two passing merchant ships helped save the survivors, underscoring how civilian vessels are often drawn into emergency operations when migrant boats run into trouble at sea.
The latest shipwreck comes amid rough weather and dangerous sea conditions that have made crossings from North Africa to Europe even more perilous this year. Humanitarian groups say the central Mediterranean remains one of the deadliest migration corridors in the world, where overloaded boats, weak rescue coverage and smuggling networks continue to put thousands of lives at risk.
The International Organization for Migration has said at least 683 migrants have died or gone missing in the central Mediterranean since the start of 2026, one of the highest tolls recorded in recent years. Italian government data also show that more than 6,000 migrants have arrived in Italy by sea so far this year, reflecting the continued pressure on this route despite repeated disasters.
The sea route between Libya and Italy has for years remained a major passage for migrants and asylum seekers trying to reach Europe, even as it has become synonymous with deadly shipwrecks and disappearances. Many people attempting the journey flee war, poverty, political repression or economic collapse, only to face exploitation by smugglers and life-threatening conditions at sea.
