Cyprus women’s cricket team beat Greece

Cyprus hosted the Greek women’s national cricket team from April 3–5, at Happy Valley Cricket Ground in Episkopi for a six-match series known as the Aphrodite Cup.

It was a closely contested series, with the more experienced Cyprus women’s team securing a 4–1 victory against a young and athletic Greece side, while one match was abandoned due to rain. This marked the first bilateral series between the two nations, played in excellent spirit throughout.

Efthmiou Polydorou of the Cyprus Olympic Committee attended the presentation ceremony and expressed appreciation to the Hellenic Cricket Federation for visiting Cyprus. Representing the Hellenic Cricket Federation, Eirini Theodoraki thanked the Cyprus Cricket Federation for their hospitality and presented a commemorative memento to Cyprus Cricket Federation President Muhammad Hussain.

Cyprus began the series ranked 42nd in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings and climbed two places to 40th following their strong performance.

Cyprus captain Iresha Chathurani, who is set to represent the ICC Europe women’s team against MCC women at Lord’s on April 17 as part of the MCC’s annual Women’s Day celebrations, emerged as the leading batter of the series. Greece’s promising talent Sofia Nefeli Georgota was awarded both Best Bowler and Most Valuable Player.

Elsewhere, in the 2026 Cyprus Cricket T20 Cup, presented by HurryCurry, matches held on Sunday, saw Larnaca Kings suffer an unexpected 10-run defeat to Larnaca Warriors in a low-scoring contest, largely due to conceding 35 extras. Harpreet Singh was the standout performer for the Warriors, claiming 4 wickets for 23 runs in his four overs.

Earlier in the day, Markhor continued their strong form with a 39-run DLS victory over BFC in a rain-affected match. BFC struggled to build momentum, losing wickets consistently and finishing at 109/7 in 20 overs. Markhor were well in control at 73/1 in 7.1 overs when rain halted play, with no further action possible.

In the final game, Telugu 11 began their campaign in dominant fashion, defeating Kypro Tigers by 129 runs. Captain Subbareddy Alavala led from the front with 57 runs, supported by a 70-run opening stand with Sankar Mekala (37). Rama Krishna then delivered an outstanding bowling performance, taking 5/25 to dismantle Kypro Tigers, who were bowled out for 69 in 16 overs.

Looking ahead, the coming week will feature nearly a dozen national team players representing their respective clubs as they prepare for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Sub-Regional Qualifiers. The tournament will be hosted in Cyprus from May 14–24 in Episkopi, with 10 European teams competing for a place in the 2027 regional finals.
