Chrysler Recalls More Than 178,000 Pacifica Minivans For Airbag Fault
A new recall from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) covers more than 178,000 Pacifica and Voyager minivans for an issue that has cropped up in the past: faulty curtain airbags. In a van intended to carry families, it's a serious recall. The automaker's filings with the NHTSA indicate that the Pacifica accounts for the bulk of the 178,246 recalled vans. 2022 to 2026 Pacificas have been recalled, to the tune of 154,367 units, while 23,879 2022 to 2025 Voyager models have also been recalled.
The NHTSA says that some (around 30 percent of the recalled total) Chrysler Pacifica vans may have been built with a curtain airbag that may not retain "sufficient pressure" during deployment. In other words, the airbags may not hold air. The problem can be traced back to May 17, 2022, when Chrysler believes the faulty airbags were introduced into production. The issue was removed from production for both models by August 8, 2025.
Here's the gory, technical summary of the airbag issue: Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 226 S4.2.1 requires that "When propelled… into the impact target locations … the most outboard surface of the … headform must not displace more
than 100 millimeters beyond the zero displacement plane." These faulty curtain airbags may not retain sufficient pressure to prevent headform displacement of more than 100 mm, thus violating the FMVSS in question.
Most critically, the problem reduces protection for occupants during an accident. The fix is simple: dealers will replace the driver's side curtain airbag, the passenger-side airbag, or both, depending on your specific vehicle. Last year, Chrysler issued the first recall for these faulty airbags and has since expanded it to cover a greater swath of Pacifica and Voyager models. Owners will be notified between May 14 and 19, 2026. Meanwhile, you can check your own VIN or year, make, and model online at the NHTSA's website to determine if your Pacifica or Voyager is covered under the recall.
