Suspect who allegedly sexually assaulted woman near Loop parking garage arrested
Charges were pending for a man police took into custody shortly after he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman near a Loop parking garage Monday morning, according to Chicago police.
The woman, 20, was walking in the first block of North Michigan Avenue at 6:35 a.m. when the man approached her and assaulted her, police said. Witnesses intervened and the man fled before being arrested by police shortly after.
The woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said.
A spokesperson for Millennium Garages, which is in the first block of North Michigan Avenue, told a reporter they would have information to release at a later time.
As the situation folded, “multiple” 911 calls reporting a criminal sexual assault were received by the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications, police scanner transmissions showed.
A woman who says she parks in the garage often — and declined to give her name for safety and privacy reasons — said she brings her dog when she parks in the garage late at night.
Another woman, who similarly declined to give her name and works nearby, said people often take shelter in the garage lobby but no one had ever been threatening or violent in her experience.
Charges are pending.
