New murals to be unveiled in Nicosia
A new series of murals is transforming the streets of Agioi Omologites and inviting the public to look again. Get ready for the Have You Seen It? – Art Around Town event series that will unfold in the charming Nicosia neighbourhood from Sunday for one week. Bringing together three established local artists to create site-specific murals, the programme opens up a wider conversation around art in public space.
The programme launches with a full day of events and continues throughout the week. All activities are free and open to the public. Community BBQs, exhibitions, murals, guided neighbourhood walks and more activities will engage old and young with art and urban space talks.
The initiative features new mural works by Simone Philippou, Milenko Stevanovic and Twenty Three. Philippou’s mural reflects on the relationship between the neighbourhood and its natural surroundings, acting as a shrine to a missing tree and introducing greenery from the nearby linear park into the heart of Agioi Omologites.
Milenko Stevanovic’s work, exhibited across Belgrade, Florence and Tokyo, draws from everyday observations, inserting familiar everyday moments into the street to break up the concrete. Twenty Three works across stencil, installation and participatory practices. His work is visible across Nicosia, including murals on Trikoupi Street and opposite the new municipality. At this event, he turns to micromobility, exploring how children move through and experience the city.
The initiative begins with a BBQ lunch at OPU House, one of the organisers of the event along with IN TOTO. After the 1.30pm lunch, a Kids ’CurioCity Walk will be held welcoming children as young as three and their parents to discover the Agioi Omologites area. Another CurioCity Walk for older participants will be held at 4pm on the same day, both led in Greek and English.
The walks will centre conversation around art, graffiti and the city, guiding neighbourhood explorations designed to help participants observe, reflect on, and engage with their urban environment in new ways.
A post-walk conversation will be held at IN TOTO at 5.30pm to continue the discussion while a private CurioCity Walk for pre-schoolers of the local primary school will also take place as part of OPU’s efforts to engage young people with their local environment.
The day’s agenda will continue with the exhibition opening at IN TOTO between 4pm and 8pm. The exhibition will run from March 30 to April 4 featuring also limited-edition screenprints of the Agioi Omologites murals and a short documentary on their making and the role of art in shaping the neighbourhood. Prints will be available for purchase, with proceeds supporting neighbourhood initiatives.
