Honda's Hybrid Lineup Makes It The Most Fuel-Efficient Automaker of 2025
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released its 2025 Automotive Trends Report. Within, the EPA discloses key data on how each manufacturer fares across various metrics. In estimated real-world fuel economy, Honda managed to come out on top for 2024, the most current and complete set of data the EPA has. That makes the Japanese automaker the most fuel-efficient automaker by a healthy margin, though it's worth noting that the metric applies only to gasoline-driven automakers, not EV-only marques like Tesla or Rivian.
Honda's figures, according to the report, indicate an average of 31 miles per gallon (MPG) across the brand's 2024 lineup. It comes out to a healthy 3.8 mpg higher than the industry average, leading second-place Hyundai by 1.2 mpg. More importantly, Honda shows improvement in its average fuel economy across its lineup. Between the 2023 and 2024 model years, Honda showed a 2.7-mpg average improvement, significantly better than the 0.1-mpg average improvement for the rest of the industry.

Honda's lineup is incredibly hybrid-focused, especially in recent years. The shift, clearly, has paid dividends for the brand's fuel economy metrics. The automaker managed to sell more than 400,000 hybrids in 2025, which indicates strong consumer demand for more efficient vehicles.

Honda's EV plans look less rosy. The brand just killed two upcoming EVs, its 0 sedan and SUV, as well as an Acura crossover EV. The pivot away from EVs and towards hybrids will drastically harm Honda's average fuel economy standards, though there is a caveat: there's always a little math magic done to generate a "fuel economy" figure for EV brands like Tesla, and the vehicles themselves: Tesla "averaged" 117.1 mpg on the EPA report. Of course, this is due to the fact that they don't burn gasoline. Regardless of the rough equivalency used by the EPA to illustrate how much more efficient an electric car is, Honda's pivot away from EVs will lead to an estimated 29.6 average mpg for the 2025 model year.
