Peterson Ends Spring Training On High Note

In the New York Mets’ final spring training game of 2026, David Peterson threw five strong innings in a 4-3 loss against the Miami Marlins. The 2025 All-Star performed well, allowing just one earned run on five hits and one walk across 76 pitches.

Peterson started the game by retiring six of the first seven hitters in two scoreless innings, before the Marlins tagged him for one run in the third. After opening that inning by giving up back to back singles, Peterson would put Miami on the board with a wild pitch.

He had to work around some more traffic on the bases in the fourth and fifth inning, but managed to pitch his way out of any further trouble. “Good to get through five innings, get my pitch count up even more and saw what I needed to see out of the pitches today. Felt good with the outing overall,” Peterson said after the game.

With Freddy Peralta, Nolan McLean and even Kodai Senga getting plenty of attention, Peterson’s name has quietly gone under the radar this offseason. But people should not forget how important he was to the rotation’s early success in 2025. There was a reason why he was named an All-Star, and deservedly so. Pitching to a 3.06 ERA over his first 18 starts was impressive, providing 11 quality starts over that stretch.

There’s no denying that Peterson ran out of gas down the stretch last season. But it’s not totally uncommon to see a starter experience that, especially in a season where he threw more innings than ever before. After reaching 168 2/3 innings in his age 29 season, Peterson has established himself as a reliable arm for the Mets.

Peralta, McLean and Senga enter the 2026 season as the clear top three in the rotation. But Peterson could take them from being a good to great staff. “I think we have all sorts of different guys, I don’t think our rotation fits into a cookie cutter mold of any sort. I think every guy brings something different to the table,” Peterson said about their pitching staff.

Peterson is set to begin his 2026 regular season against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, March 28th. He has yet to beat them in his career, pitching to a 4.71 ERA over five appearances (four starts).
